On April 6th Alexander Ovechkin was chasing greatness in Madison Square Garden as he was set to set the all time record for goals in the NHL.

Wayne “The Great One” Gretzky is the term holder of this record scoring 894 goals throughout his career. About five years ago, anybody would’ve told you it would be impossible for an aging and regressing Ovechkin to pass Wayne.

Before the season, many were hopeful Ovechkin could beat the record, but almost no one predicted him to be able to explode this season and score 46 goals up to this point. This feat that Ovechkin accomplished will cement him as one of the greats of the game.

Ovechkin broke the record in the second period of a game against the New York Islanders in their rink. The entire away crowd got on their feet to celebrate as Ovechkin celebrated by sliding on his stomach to center ice.
