Sartell Anglers Corner: Color Selection

Picking the Right Colors for Beginner Anglers

Peyton Henkensiefken

These are some of the colors that were suggested in the article.

There are all sorts of crazy colors out there when it comes to different types of hard baits and soft plastics. You don’t need to have every color though. There are only a few colors that I believe every bass angler should have in their arsenal.

The first color group is going to be the greens, browns, and more natural colors. The main one is green pumpkin; this is one of the best colors in my opinion, when it comes to natural lakes. It works very well in clear, clean water, and on days when the sun is shining.

The next color is going to be a light brown, or “pumpkin seed” color. This is also good in natural lakes and clean water. I mostly use this for fishing on breaklines.

Along with green pumpkin, I always suggest green pumpkin with some red flakes in it. This green is generally a little bit lighter, and more translucent. And the slight red coloring in it makes it something that a lot of fish just can’t resist.

The next color group is more of the blues, and blacks, more dirty water, cloudy day colors. The most well known color is junebug, this is a great dirty water color. It is slightly purple but has some blue, and teal flakes in it.

Another blue color is black blue. Black blue is also very popular in dirty water, it is on plastics generally half blue, and half black. I really like this color when it comes to flipping cover, like pads, rice and sometimes reeds.

Those are colors that are great for soft plastics and some hard baits.

When it comes to top water baits, there are two colors that I use. Black and white. Keep it simple when you are throwing topwater baits, use a white on a cloudy day and black on a sunny day.

As for the hard baits, I like to keep reds, whites, pinks, and blue. I like to the reds for when you are trying to imitate crawfish, because they generally have a more red color to them.

I like whites and pinks mostly when it comes to smallmouth. Those are colors that they can’t seem to resist, and when you get your timing down, you can have a great day on the water.

The blue hard baits I like for super clear and clean water, they usually have a little extra flash and the fish can see them from a mile away.

So, when it comes to color selection, keep it simple. Gain confidence in a few basic colors, and then slowly you can work in some of those more crazy wild colors.

The murder of Ahmaud Arbery: Profiling or Vigilantism?

Photo via Twitter

Ahmaud Arbery was shot and killed by two Georgia men.

The discussion of racial profiling and injustice in America is at an all-time high with police brutality, the black lives matter movement, and so many cases of black men being beaten or killed by police officers for the wrong reasons.

Ahmaud Arbery was a typical former high school football standout so he stayed fit. The 25-year-old never would expect to be stopped by two white men. That is what happened on February 23rd, 2020 in Brunswick, Georgia according to the New York Times. It was not uncommon to see Arbery running as his neighbors saw him routinely. These two men, Greg and Travis McMichael stopped Arbery and chased him in their truck with a loaded .357 Revolver and a Shotgun purely on suspicion of him breaking into a construction site.

This is a disgusting example of what a citizen’s arrest should and could look like. The problem with what the McMichael’s did was that they had zero evidence of Arbery ever committing this crime. The only credible source of evidence is a ten-second security camera tape of Arbery walking through the construction site, which might I add is not a crime in the slightest.

I think this case is not as based on profiling (although I think race is still a key factor) but rather I think it is about vigilantism at its core. Let this be a lesson to the public, if you did not witness the crime or have gathered exclusive evidence of someone committing a crime, you have zero reasons to demand answers from them, chase them, or shoot them period.

I am not blind to the fact that race could have also caused this issue. The reason I do not think it was the whole reason is because of the way the McMichaels approached the situation. If they would have gone directly to Arbery and shot him I would think one-hundred percent this is a case of racial profiling. They approached the scene in a concerned and analytical matter and stopped Arbery to try and talk with him to get information. Arbery, like any other person, ignored their “commands” to talk to him because of their suspicions. This is why I think the probability of vigilantism being the cause of Arbery’s death is far more possible.

This shooting, in my opinion, has also just been another avenue for the media to have a hay day and blame people that are in no way responsible. They do this all the time with most people who oppose their viewpoints. A newscast from CNN pictures the story and Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms commenting, “The rhetoric that we hear coming out of the White House in many ways, I think many who are prone to being racist are given permission to do it.”

Do people realize how stupid they sound on the air? It is truly baffling to me and so many others. Our President had zero to do with these men being vigilantes and actually denounced what these men did to Arbery at a daily White House briefing.

The way that the media right now especially are trying to destroy President Trump’s reputability is truly disgusting. Instead of playing politics around this situation, how about we actually analyze this crime and do not politicize a man’s tragic passing just because you can. This whole situation has truly exemplified for me at least how toxic some people in the media have become.

The real tragedy that has happened here is how the crime was handled after the fact. With almost no evidence against Arbery, these men were allowed to roam free for two months until this was reinvestigated when new footage was released. This is a truly horrifying event, and my thoughts are with the family of Ahmaud Arbery.

I have a request for all sides of the media. When a man, a perfectly well-rounded man, dies, keep your politics out of it. There are a time and a place for political discussion. Discussing politics hovering over someone’s grave, is not acceptable.

State officials announce new guidelines for graduation ceremonies

photo via Flickr under the Creative Commons

Graduates are facing struggles on how to still celebrate their milestone while also following safety guidelines.

The Class of 2020 is standing still as Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and the MN Department of Education, Office of Higher Education, and MN Department of Health have made further announcements and guidelines for upcoming commencement ceremonies. This statement was made on Friday, May 8th recommends that virtual ceremonies are the best option when possible so that the graduates and their families do not have to leave their homes.

Ideas have been sparked around Minnesota of social-distanced ceremonies on football fields or stadiums. These ideas become completely thwarted with this new policy which prohibits the school from doing any ceremonies indoors or in large outdoor gatherings.

The guidance statement reads, ”We know that many schools have considered ceremonies outside in stadium or football fields. In-person social gatherings with people from multiple households, even in situations where ample space between attendees could be accommodated, does not comply with social distancing practices and introduces a great deal of contact unpredictability, and increases the potential for disease transmission.”

Other alternatives worth mentioning are car parades or possibly parking lot ceremonies. In the department’s statement, they explained that schools should consider whether it will be safe for all attendees.

“Consider whether having an event encourages people in high-risk groups (particularly older adults and people with underlying health conditions) or ill individuals to come out rather than stay at home. People may come out because of their desire to celebrate this significant milestone and not wanting to be “left out,” the guidance further reads.

If the school districts do decide that they would like to pursue a parking lot or parade type of ceremony, the guidance states that each household should be in separate vehicles, and people showing COVID-19 symptoms should not attend the proposed events.

Receiving the diplomas has also been a topic of concern for many but the guidelines stand firm on the issue. The guidance said that any school that chooses to distribute materials like diplomas or certificates must be done in a contactless way, with the distributors wearing face coverings.

The state also urges that any ceremonies proposed under these guidelines should accommodate so that the ceremonies ensure equal participation from all students. In the time of need, MN officials put out this statement with the best intentions, off of the information they have been given.

Education Commissioner Mary Cathryn Ricker said in a statement. “The health and safety of our students and their families will always be our top priority. This year’s graduation ceremonies will look different than they traditionally do, and I am confident our schools will find creative ways to recognize the incredible work and commitment of our graduating students. The class of 2020 persisted in their education through this unprecedented and uncertain time with a school experience that was difficult to navigate. I am proud of these students, I am inspired by these students, and I congratulate them on never giving up and reaching this major milestone.”

Graduations all across the great state of Minnesota will unfortunately not be as planned, but that should not stop districts from making them just as great.

Gym re-opens under close watch of cops

Screenshot from Atilis gym website

New Jersey gym owner Ian Smith said he was going to open even though NJ is still under a stay-at-home order.

On Monday a New Jersy gym owner re-opened after complying with the stay-at-home order for three months to help flatten the curve the residents are “sick and tired” with the order and their rights being taken away from them.

Ian Smith the owner of Atilis Gyms said in an interview with Fox News that the decision was made by him and his family and the input that the community had on him. Smith vowed to keep the gym open even with the police presence trying to shut him down to obey with the stay at home order.

Smith also has made many changes to the gym such only letting in a few members at a time as well as taking temperatures at the doors and anyone with a fever of over 100.4 will not be allowed into the gym until the fever has been gone for at least 48 hours. One of the biggest challenges with the gym is people using the same machines after someone else has used it and not wiped it down.  They sought to combat this with giving each person their own bottle of disinfecting spray and a roll of paper towels to wipe down their equipment before and after each use.

This is all too real as many small business owners are feeling the effects of the stay at home order and how it affects them and their business.  Smith said that “Our sales have been down 80% for the gym. The only thing that we can do is sell supplements online. This is the main reason we’re even allowed to still pay our employees.”

They plan on opening to the general public on Thursday. Even with the police presence, they still will be there and fighting for their rights. Smith believes that this is unfair for them to not let him open even though the gym will follow all social distancing guidelines and many other policies help stop the spread many of the other big box stores are open and they are not doing as much to combat the virus.

Georgia re-opens state

"The Carolinas and Georgia" by sjrankin is licensed under CC BY-NC 2.0

Georgia reopened the state on April 28th but data about COVID cases may be skewed.

On April 28th Georgia Governor Brian Kemp lifted the stay at home order and re-opened the state. He enforced social distancing and what he called “ common sense health guidelines”

Kemp was extremely criticized by this by all the major news outlets and even President Donald Trump.

However Saturday afternoon Kemp tweeted ou“Today marks the lowest number of COVID-19 positive patients currently hospitalized statewide (1,203) since hospitals began reporting this data on April 8th.” Kemp also said, “Today also marks the lowest total of ventilators in use (897 with 1,945 available). We will win this fight together!”

Not more than 2 weeks after the restrictions were lifted, Georgia saw a huge suge in out of state visitors and as they have not seen a spike in Covid-19 cases many fear that they are just incubation in the citizens. As the incubation period can be up to 2 weeks this can create some false numbers as people do not know whether they are sick or not and it will be interesting to see what’s going to happen as more people travel to Georgia and as more and more people leave their houses.

Sartell Anglers’ Corner: MN fish

Peyton Henkensiefken

Largemouth Bass caught by Nick Greer and Peyton Henkensiefken

Looking for a new hobby? How about a new challenge? Fishing might be the perfect thing for you.

Fishing is something you can do your whole life, and every day on the water will be different. This makes it challenging; it’s also why most anglers enjoy fishing so much.

Living in Minnesota, there are several fish species to be caught, along with an incredible amount of techniques to catch those fish.

Senior Nick Greer said, “My favorite fish to catch is largemouth bass, I mostly catch ‘em on a Texas rigged creature bait.”

Largemouth bass are found in almost all Minnesota lakes and rivers, making them a very popular fish. There are many different techniques to catch these fish.

Sophomore Dylan Welle shared his opinion, “ I like casting a lot. Sight Fishing is probably my favorite technique. I love using the ned rig, jig, chatterbait, and spooks. I enjoy catching smallmouth bass most.”

Smallmouth bass are similar to a largemouth. They choose to hide in different cover, they particularly like rocks. You can catch these using many techniques as well. Most anglers choose to use more finesse type baits.  Smallmouth can be more of a challenge, but hooking up with a big one will sure get your heart pumping.

There is also the Minnesota State Fish, the walleye. Our PE  teacher Mr. Sailor said, “I like catching walleye mostly, that’s what I grew up fishing for. Most of the time I drift for them.”

Walleye are less populated in lakes compared to the largemouth and smallmouth bass. If you are looking to do some walleye fishing you can head to Mille Lacs Lake. Lake of the Woods in northern Minnesota is also a very popular destination for walleye anglers.

Apple’s latest and greatest iPhone

Diego Melendez

The new iPhone SE 2nd Gen. has the body of an iPhone 8, a new camera system, and a new placement of the Apple logo (to match the new iPhone 11 and 11 Max).

First things first, this phone is not what you expect it to be. This phone isn’t some monster with all the high-end specs, parts, and features that you would normally find on a flagship phone (ie: the iPhone 11 Pro Max).

This phone is for the everyman.

This phone is for your relative that doesn’t really care about phones and just needs something cheap, easy to use, and has a good camera because let’s be honest, that’s what basically everyone in the world wants when they buy a new phone. Most people aren’t excited to dish out a thousand dollars for a phone when they’ll really only be using very few amounts of the high-end features that phones offer these days. So with that being said, I guess I should actually talk about the phone now.

iPhone SE 2
The front side of the new iPhone SE 2nd Gen. has an all black face on all the models- red, black, and white. (Diego Melendez)

The specs-

The new iPhone SE 2nd generation is basically an iPhone 11 in an iPhone 8 body, with the addition of a new camera system and wireless charging. The phone comes in three colors, black, silver, and red (when you purchase the red model, the money goes to the global COVID-19 fund).

test picture one
The camera on the new iPhone SE 2 is able to pick up small details in bright lighting (Diego Melendez)
tes picture 2
The camera on the new iPhone SE 2 also performs well with differing lighting on subjects. (Diego Melendez)

The price-

Inarguably the most important aspect of this new phone is its price. Apple has set this new phone to start at $399 dollars. Let that price point sink in for just a second. $399 dollars, for a brand new iPhone. Considering the prices that Apple has set for its products, this price point is mind-boggling to anyone who has followed the iPhone for a while.

Now, look at the price of this phone and look at Apple as a company. When you purchase a product from Apple, you usually expect to see great features from a product that costs a lot of money. For Apple to release a product that has the same internals as its flagship phone, but for less than half the cost, people will certainly purchase this product. To many people, it’s a no brainer to spend $400 on a phone that can almost do the same as $700 or $1,000 dollar phone.

But remember that this phone is not perfect.  For the price point and its features, Apple could’ve added more things to this phone. Maybe a new model, maybe new colors or even better, a battery that doesn’t last as long as the iPhone 8. By the way, the iPhone 8 came out in 2017, and we know Apple can do much better than this. But for a company like Apple to finally reach the market of “budget phones” is a big leap, and we can see that Apple is trying something new.

What else could we possibly ask for?

Gun sales in April spiked by more than 70 percent from the previous year

Gun stores across the country are seeing spikes in sales during the Covid-19 epidemic

Since April 2019, gun sales have gone up at an astonishing rate of 71.3 percent.

Concerns of food shortages, as well as the paranoia of the Covid-19 pandemic, have seemed to affect the sales of firearms.

The Small Arms Analytics & Forecasting website shows that an estimated 1,797,910 firearms were purchased in April 2020 with 1,085,046 of the sales being handguns, and 560,353 of the sales being “long-gun” sales.

Abdi Sharif found dead near river in Des Moines

photo taken via under the creative commons license

Abdi Sharif's family has some answers now that they've found their son's body.

Abdullahi “Abdi” Sharif, a 18 year old boy who attends Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa has been missing since leaving his Target shift on January 17th.  His body was found on May 4th.

He was about to go home and was kidnapped by somebody and went missing and there was no trace of where he had gone. But then they had pinged his phone and found a little clue to help find him and return him to his family. They went to the location where his phone was pinged and there was nothing there and nobody in sight. Kayakers were traveling down the river when they noticed the dead body near Prospect Park. The lead police officer on the task force stated: “That was pretty close to the spot where Abdi’s phone had last pinged.”

The police stated that there was a “lack of video evidence” but there was still some video of him before he went missing. The police also said that what he was doing was “very out of character for him” saying that whatever he was doing was not something that he normally does. Google Maps indicated it’s about a 80 minute walk from Merle Hay Mall where he was last seen to where his body was found. The police stated that where the body was found they searched many times before but since the water was frozen over and the conditions were not favorable and that nobody could see him from on the water or from the banks. The police also stated, “We were hoping that the longer it went on, the chances were greater that we would find him alive somewhere and there would be some sort of explanation.”

The family of Abdi set up a GoFundMe page to help support his family.

Outer Banks Review

photo via Wikipedia under the creative commons license

A picture of a tourist on the shore of Lake Superior with Split Rock Lighthouse in the background.

Outer Banks is a very fun exciting show on Netflix that will fill you up with wanting more.

It is based out of Outer Banks, North Carolina, and it is about these teenagers who go on a real life treasure hunt and look for gold that washed up on a ship several thousands of years ago. The main character John Buckerutledge is an only child who lives on the bad side of town where he is constantly working and doesn’t have very much money. His father was also in search of the gold from the royal merchant but was never found at sea a couple months before they were introduced to the cast and their lives.

Outer Banks is a great action-packed show with a lot of plot twists and that Sarah Cameron is very pretty.”

— Senior, Sam Fernholz

John B’s best friend JJ calls him. His life is terrible and that’s the best outcome of what his life is like, his father is abusive after his mother left them. His life is very hard, and he kind of has an anger problem. He tends to punch things or people quite a bit.

Their other best friend, who is a guy, is Pope. His dad is the main grocery store delivery person and very loved and well known on the island. Pope is very smart. He is up for a scholarship with only three other kids in America to go to any college they please, for free.

Lastly the final person in the group Kiara is a rich girl but doesn’t like the way that they live life so she is best friends with the boys and she basically is one of the guys. They are called the Pogues because they live on the poor side of the island and the Kooks are the rich and always blame the Pogues for the wrongdoing on the island. John B. likes one of the Kooks. Her name is Sarah Cameron, daughter of the famous Wade Cameron who is a well known realtor on the island. They start looking for the long lost treasure and come up with some very big problems from other people finding it. It is a very exciting thrilling TV series, and I would highly recommend watching it.

I would highly recommend [this show] because it is my favorite TV series on Netflix. I watched it all in one day!”

Staying Social While Social Distancing

Lauren Wensel

Many people are making fun plans for when quarantine ends.

As the ‘stay-at-home’ order stands in Minnesota, many citizens are getting really anxious to see their friends. It is more important that people stay healthy, rather than giving into their desires to see their friends face-to-face. There are a few super fun, online ways to have fun with your friends as the stay at home order comes to a close.

1) Brunch or baking call

One fun activity you could plan is a Zoom or Houseparty call where you and your friends all cook or bake a certain recipe. You can deliver a few groceries to each friend, set up a time when you will meet online. You can cook/bake with a sense that you are in the same kitchen, and then enjoy your food while catching up.

2) Play card games online

There are several fun and easy card games out there that you can play with friends online. One site you can use is Playing, but you can search for a site with your favorite card game; there’s quite a few of them. For the gamers out there, it is a good way to play games online but still stay connected with your friends. This can also be a fun, new experience for the friends that never play card games.

3) Have a painting or drawing competition

If your friend group enjoys art, hold a little painting or drawing competition in a group chat. You can decide to all create the same image, or you could all do your own thing. It could be fun to watch the same painting tutorial from Bob Ross or any other artist. You can decide on a judge, or just send each other your final products for fun if you’re less competitive.

4) Have a meme competition

You could do an Apples to Apples style meme competition in your friend group’s group chat. Select a judge, and everyone else sends a funny meme. Then, the judge picks the best meme. Everyone can take turns being the judge. This is a great way to have a good laugh with your friends and put yourself in a great mood.

Vampire Diaries is a Netflix series that you can not go wrong with.(Photo via Soul Fan Art under the CC BY-NC-ND 2.0 license)

5) Use Netflixparty to watch movies or shows together

Netflixparty is a free website that synchronizes any movie or series on Netflix with as many people as you wish. It is a great way to stay on the same page and talk about what you are watching with friends. All of your friends must have a Netflix subscription, however, for this to work.

6) Do Tik Tok dances or challenges

Tik Tok has debatably become more popular than Instagram and Snapchat during quarantine. It can be really fun to make videos on the app, either learning dances or trying the most recent challenges, and showing them off to friends. It is exciting watching your friends’ videos, rather than people you have never met.

7) Plan a future camping trip or vacation

By now, I think everyone has thought about all the fun things they will do when quarantine finally comes to an end. If you and your friends have been thinking about going on a trip in the future, make a Google doc and plan out the trip. It will be nice to have something to look forward to, and you will save time in the long run.

You can workout with friends virtually in your house. (Lauren Wensel)

8) Have a virtual sweat session

It can be hard to get moving when gyms are closed, sports are cancelled, and you are not supposed to leave your house. One way you can get active is pull up a YouTube workout video on your computer or tv. FaceTime a friend or a few, and you can follow along to the video together. Exercising will boost your serotonin levels, and make you feel more energized. Working out with friends can make it feel like less of a chore.

9) Start a book club

Reading is an activity that will keep your mind sharp during quarantine. Agree on a book to read with a group, set a time frame, and go on Zoom or Houseparty every couple of days to discuss the book. Pick a juicy book to make the conversations fun and interesting. No matter how serious your book discussions are, you will have a good time seeing each other’s faces and just talking!

Restaurant in Colorado draws a large crowd for Mother’s Day

Image used under the Creative Commons license

Colorado's state enforced limits on restaurants might be violated by this restaurant.

A restaurant in Colorado drew large crowds on Sunday, May 10th for the celebration of Mother’s Day, despite the public health order stating the limit of food services to just takeout and delivery.

The owner of Castle Rock’s C&C Kitchen, April Allenano, claims that the restaurant would have gone out of business if she had not “done something.” This meant the owner’s business would have gone under if the large crowd had not shown up and monetarily supported the business.

The governor of Colorado denounced the actions of the restaurant saying it’s breaking the law and endangering the lives of others due to the state-enforced limitations on restaurants and social distancing rules. The owner could face a $1,000 fine or spend up to a year in jail, along with even having the restaurant’s license removed because of this event.
