Coach Prime: Is he actually a good coach?

Deion Sanders, AKA Coach Prime, was hired as the new head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes last week, and many people are left wondering how well this guy can actually coach.

Deion Sanders has racked up a career 27-6 record in his coaching career at Jackson State, but can this guy actually coach? Being at an FCS program, and recruiting many high major talents, many wonder if it’s his coaching ability getting it done, or just the superior talent of his athletes, like Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders. They are expected to follow coach to Colorado, as Travis Hunter recently entered the transfer portal. No other school he played at has anywhere near the talent of this program, and many of his wins are just lopsided blowouts. Jackson State lost once this season, that loss coming in their bowl game. They have only played two games this year that were even within one score. They have outscored their opponents a whopping 490-176 this season, with over a fourth of those coming in their overtime bowl game loss to NC Central. But, can this guy actually coach?

When looking online, it is nearly impossible to find an article bad-mouthing Deion Sanders as a coach. Just about the only things you can find are people angry that he left an HBCU or Reddit users who claim he doesn’t understand the true “x’s and o’s” of football.

When it does come down to the true scheming of football, I couldn’t even find out what exactly this guy coaches on a team. Everyone knows him for his days as a star corner in the NFL, but what side of the ball does he even coach on? He has openly bad mouthed his former JSU offensive coordinator for being so one dimensional, so Deion has never been a play-caller at Jackson State. I think he called the defense at one point for JSU, as he expressed his frustration in one of his first seasons there with the defense. Throughout his last few years, it’s honestly hard to determine what he actually coaches.

Obviously, a head coach still has many responsibilities other than calling a side of the ball, but at times it does feel like he is nothing more than a motivational speaker. He is not the coaching mind of Nick Saban or Dabo Swinney, but that is exactly why he is starting at the bottom of the power five food chain.

Many sites had him as the number one available coach in college football and praise his leadership and ability to mold athletes into men throughout their time under him. He has already gone out and gotten a few big recruits like 4 star running back Dylan Edwards and Asaad Waseem. I think he will ascend to the number one recruiter in college football shortly. Knowing the talent he will be able to bring in immediately, I think Colorado will be able to get close to the .500 mark and become an above average school in the PAC-12 right away.
