The show was broadcast on May 23rd, 2021 on NBC.

Sunday, May 23rd was a big night in music. The Billboard Music Awards highlights and awards artists who make chart-topping songs and albums, recognizes the artists for their hard work (whether they are new to the scene or have been around for years) and is full of jaw-dropping performances.

This year’s Billboard Music Awards looked a little different because of Covid-19, but that didn’t stop artists from giving it their all during their live performances. There were outdoor performances and an outdoor award show, socially distanced tables for the nominees, and everyone in the crowd was wearing masks.

The award show was hosted by Nick Jonas who performed a medley alongside his brothers Joe and Kevin to close out the show.

The show was opened by a performance of “We Going Crazy” by DJ Khaled, H.E.R., and Migos.

Following them, there were performances from Doja Cat and SZA, Twenty One Pilots, The Weeknd, BTS, Alicia Keys, Glass Animals, AJR, P!nk, Karol G, Bad Bunny, Duran Duran, and The Jonas Brothers.

Twenty One Pilots performed “Shy Away” from their new album Scaled and Icy which was released on Friday, May 21st and they were accompanied on stage by a huge blue dragon set piece.

P!nk received the Icon Award that was presented by Jon Bon Jovi (who was her childhood crush) and had a performance of her own that was a medley of her most popular songs. She also had an aerial performance with her daughter Willow where they sang their song “Cover Me in Sunshine”.

Drake received the Artist of the Decade award and went onstage to accept his award with his son Adonis, which ended with some tears because of all the excitement. Drake is the most awarded artist in BBMA history with a total of 29 awards.

The Weeknd received the most awards of the night; walking away with 10 awards (out of 16 nominations) bringing his BBMA award total to 19. The Weeknd also had the coolest performance of the evening hands down with a huge synchronized car dance to “Save Your Tears.”

The most anticipated performance of the night was definitely the debut of the new single “Butter” from BTS. “Butter” is their second English single alongside the smash hit “Dynamite” which was released earlier this year. The performance was pre-recorded in Seoul, South Korea, and broadcast for the event. BTS won a total of four awards which brought their total of BBMA awards up to 9.

Machine Gun Kelly won 2 awards, one of which was Top Rock Artist following the release of his 2020 album Tickets To My Downfall. He was joined at the award show by girlfriend Megan Fox and it is safe to say they were the most talked about and hottest couple of the evening (they even had painted nails that matched!).
