On December 10, 2020, Netflix released its live-action adaptation of Alice in Borderland. A dark, twisted and grim retelling of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. After a very impressive first season, it is looking that fans of the show may be getting some good news regarding a second season very soon.
The series synopsis is relatively simple. Three friends hiding are hiding from the police in a bathroom stall when suddenly the power goes out. They emerge from the stall to find that everyone has disappeared! Soon, a few screens begin to light up throughout the city leading the trio to a game. The games are high stakes as one wrong decision will lead to a laser coming down and eliminating them permanently. If you survive the game, you are granted a visa. The difficulty of the level determines the length of time a person is safe. If their visa expires they are eliminated. In order to increase said visa, they must participate in more games.
The show has a very similar ambiance to that of The Hunger Games and The Maze Runner, however it is significantly better than both of them. It is made apparent very quickly that the show-writers are not afraid to kill off main/important characters. This just adds to the suspense and unpredictability of the series. The puzzles themselves are each complex and unique. Watching the characters work their ways through them is one of the best aspects of the show as the viewer is just as confused as the character. Every puzzle answer is satisfying in its own way. Even the ones that are all about toying with people’s emotions!
The acting is top notch. It is recommended that viewers watch the show in its original language as the dubs are truly horrendous. The acting is complimented by multiple truly thrilling action scenes and one unexpected twist followed by the next. In the end, Alice in Borderland was one of my favorite shows of 2020. I would recommend it to just about anyone! I would give it a 8.3/10 which isn’t far off from its current IMDb rating of 7.8/10.
Interested in watching this show for yourself? You can check out the trailer here. However, I must for-warn you. The show is Tv-MA and the trailer does not really do the series justice. However, it did manage to interest me, so hopefully it will for you as well :)
