The Sartell Sabre Dance Team attended the Academy of Holy Angels dance team invitational on Saturday, December 15th.

The varsity team had placed 1st in kick with a rank point of 4 and first in jazz with a rank point of 3. The junior varsity team had placed 1st in kick with a rank point of 3 and 1st in jazz with a rank point of 3, a rank point of 3 with five judges total, means every judge had that team in 1st place.

Sartell Varsity Jazz takes the floor with an amazing performance.

The Sartell Dance Team’s winter season is over halfway done. They have competed three times already this year: CLC at Sauk Rapids, Eastview Invitational and the Academy of Holy Angels Invitational. The Academy of Holy Angels Invitational was the last invitational of 2018. Both teams have three more competitions in 2019 till the varsity team competes for Sections at Alexandria High School on Saturday, February 2nd.

To recap JV’s season so far, they have won first every competition so far, which quite historical for the Sartell Sabre Dance Team. As the JV team does not have much left of their first ever winter season of 2018-19, I had the chance to hear about their season so far, what they do during practice to get ready to compete, any team rituals, and what their goals are for the winter dance team season.

Q: How is the season going so far for you?

Brenna Harrington, 9: It’s really exciting and it’s fun to be a part of something so new.

Emily Dauw, 9: I think it’s going good, we are undefeated.

Ava Scheffler, 10: Very good, we are doing very good at competitions, we are undefeated.

Q: Is winter JV what you expected?

Brenna Harrington, 9: Yes pretty much. I knew it was going to be pretty hard.

Emily Dauw, 9: It’s harder than I expected but it is fun.

Ava Scheffler, 10: Definitely not, but in a good way, going into it I kind of felt like yikes, but I feel that our team is really close, we work a lot on technique and I have improved as a dancer.

Q: What are some certain ways you get ready at practice to prepare for a competition?

Brenna Harrington, 9: We all visualize and pump each other up.

Emily Dauw, 9: We like to visualize the dance and talk about what we need to work on so that the dance is better than our last performance.

Ava Scheffler, 10: We do a lot of drilling, tightness drills, drill downs, and we have a lot of Pows during the week. We will do Pows a couple times a week. We will go out in the hall and talk about our goals.

Q: Do you or the team have any team rituals or team sayings?

Brenna Harrington, 9: Not really, besides our team cheer ‘Mega GBB’.

Emily Dauw, 9: We like to listen to “High Hopes,” that song pumps us up.

Ava Scheffler, 10: We listen to “High Hopes,” which is our team song. We usually listen to our dance songs to get hype and into the zone. Our team wants to impress the varsity coaches and our JV coaches and we want to get rid of the 5’s on our score sheet.

Q: What are your goals for the season?

Brenna Harrington, 9: To get more flexible and work on my endurance.

Emily Dauw, 9: Kick height and grow in every part of the score sheet.

Ava Scheffler, 10: Overall improving myself and getting to know my teammates better and the coaches better.
