According to a new report issued last Friday by the UN’s food security agency, approximately a billion people in Asia lack access to adequate food and nutrition. This report gathered information from three other UN agencies and encompassed information from the entire region.

Asia has recently experienced exponential economic growth and development; however, the region has seen little improvements on the hunger front. With the economy flourishing, it can be assumed that poverty has also decreased and with it hunger. That is not the case in the majority of Asia, where decreases in malnourishment has not occurred since the early 2000’s.

In some areas, near Oceania, the percent of people who are struggling with hunger has actually increased. This is an alarming statistic for world leaders, particularly Asian politicians.

The report also explains that from rural to urban areas alike there are many people who are malnourished and live in hunger.

The UN believes the high levels of hunger are related to the following factors: climate change-related disasters, lack of accessibility to clean water, and poor hygienic practices.
