Nikki Haley was on the U.N. council for two years.

Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, has announced her resignation at the start of next year after nearly two years on the council.

This marks for the Trump administration as one of their more quiet departures by a higher up official. Nikki Haley told the New Yorker that this was an “experience of a lifetime” and that she has no interest in a run against Trump in 2020.

Due to the relative surprise of her departure, many are questioning her motives on leaving the position and wonder who is set to take over. Haley was notable on the council for trying to be a voice against human rights violations, but the policies she attempted to push towards Israel angered many Palestinians and their supporters.

In leaving, Haley is ostracizing groups who opposed her U.S. initiative where she propositioned an amendment to the human rights council with ideas such as inhibiting countries with poor human rights records from election on to the council and ending excessive scrutiny against Israel.

Many of the human rights groups who contrasted these new changes were not sent an invitation to a conference Friday, despite being invited to a similar meeting last year.
