Blast from The Past: Sartell Football 30 years Ago

According to current football coach Scott Hentges, the first Sartell football team was started in 1969. Since then, Sartell football has had many proud moments. In 1994, the team won their first and only State Football Championship in the Class A division. Dean Taylor led the Sabres to a 14-0 season and then finally on November 25 to the Hubert Humphery Metrodome to win the Class A State Championship.

When the 2019 class graduates, Sartell football will have been around for an impressive 50 years. This homecoming, we will focus on the 1987 team. The 1987 captains were Jayson Peterson, Keith Justin, Steve Trobec and John Dockendorf. The Varsity roster included Travis Gross, Steve Kucala, Brent Harper, Dan Schaefer, Bill Nestel, and Craig Cook among many others. Leading the team with individual career records was Dan Schaefer with 362 points. Mike Trewick made the school record book with most interceptions in one game. Wayne Johnson was awarded “Outstanding Offensive Senior,” meanwhile John Dockendorf was awarded “Outstanding Defensive Senior.”

I found all of this info in old yearbooks located in the office and library. If you ever find yourself wondering about the history of the high school head over to either collection of yearbooks and get a glimpse of the past, the oldest yearbook in the library was the 1975 Scabbard. For right now these yearbooks are the closest thing we have to a time-traveling DeLorean.
