Lake Trout caught by Blake Anderson

It will be more than a month before there is open water to fish in central Minnesota, but the North Shore of Lake Superior has been producing numerous fish for those that chase them in the last few days. There are a few types of fish that have been being caught lately.

From the shore, both Kamloops trout and Coho salmon have been producing steady numbers for the past few weeks. These Kamloops average between five and eight pounds but have been caught as large as 14 pounds! These trout can be caught most of the year from shore, but they are easiest to catch between October and May. The Coho’s are a lot less picky but a little smaller than the Kamloops. These fish average between one and two pounds. The largest Coho salmon that I have ever seen pulled out of Lake Superior happened to be caught by yours truly and weighed in nearly 5 pounds.

There have been a few brave souls that have been getting some fish out on their boats. These brave sailors have been targeting Lake trout with a little success. Fishing the open water at this time of year is a real treat, and the fish that reward these fishermen are a treat as well. Lake trout are

extremely good table fare. They can be baked, fried or grilled to perfection. According to Kendel Hill, the Duluth native pictured to the right, the Lake trout that are caught this time of year are bigger on average. When I asked him his favorite spot to fish Lake Superior he gave a true fisherman’s answer: “On the water.”

All in all, a fishing trip to Duluth would be a great way to spend a weekend in the great outdoors.
