At 8, at 12, at 14, and 19 #metoo, ”

— a user on twitter

#metoo is a movement using social media to raise awareness about sexual harassment and for girls to speak their voice about this issue. This hashtag has been trending on media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.  Recently, the hashtag reached 85 countries with 1.7 million tweets about #metoo.

On October 15th, 2017, Alyssa Milano started the first hashtag after the film producer, Harvey Weinstein’s case.  She wrote, “If you’ve been sexually harassed or assaulted write ‘me too’ as a reply to this tweet.” This tweet moved thousands of women to tweet about their time being sexually harassed or assaulted.  This encouraged many women to break their silence and write stories about the time they were harassed or simply tweet like “At 8, at 12, at 14, and 19 #metoo.”  Numerous high profile celebrities like America Ferrera, Rose McGowan, Evan Rachel Wood, Gabrielle Union and many more share

their story.

This movement did not initially begin this month, however, the movement started ten years ago by a black female activist Tarana Burke.  She told Ebony magazine that she came up with the movement back in 2007 to let other women know that they are not alone in this situation.  “It was a catchphrase to be used from survivor to survivor to let folks know that they were not alone and that a movement for radical healing was happening and possible” explained Burke.

There are 12 million posts, comments, and reactions regarding #metoo on Facebook.  85 countries had at least 1,000 posts about the movement.  Hopefully this simple hashtag can bring awareness to such a big issue.
