After a truck transporting 103 puppies drove off the shoulder of an interstate, New York State police were there to help.

The driver, responsible for transporting the puppies to local pet stores, was driving through Avoca, New York when the accident occurred. Two animals were severely injured in the wreck.

All of the animals were pulled from the truck and brought to a local hospital by Finger Lakes SPCA. One of the injured puppies sustained a fractured jaw, and another who had a fractured leg remained hospitalized. Several other dogs sustained only minor injuries. All but two were released from the hospital by Tuesday.

It was also believed by the Finger Lakes SPCA that the animals more likely than not came from a what’s called a “puppy mill,” although the veterinarians found no sign of cruelty or means to legally confiscate the animals. Puppy mills are notorious for breeding large numbers of dogs while under inhumane conditions. The SPCA is still pursuing a formal release of ownership.
