There was a lot of hockey to be played on Thursday as the boys took on Brainerd away, and the girls also played Brainerd at Bernicks Arena. Both proved to be very good hockey games and both teams showed a lot of fight.

Boys:

The boys’ hockey team had to take the trip up to Brainerd on Thursday night to play a very good team. In their last matchup against Brainerd, they tied, so they knew it would be a highly anticipated game. They were also looking to get back on track after they dropped a game to Cathedral on Tuesday at Bernicks. Brainerd is also in their conference so this game would have playoff implications.

The game was a battle for the first two periods. The score going into the third period was 4-3 in favor of Brainerd. Unfortunately, the third period did not go as well as they had hoped. Brainerd scored quickly to push the score to 5-3. The score stayed at that until the end when Brainerd scored an empty net goal on the Sabres. The final score ended up 6-3. The Sabres got goals from Junior Jake Rosenberger, Sophomore Jack Hennemann, and Junior Garrett Freeman.

The loss leaves the Sabres overall record sitting at 11-4-3 and 6-2 in the conference. The Sabres hope to bounce back against Hutchinson on Saturday night.

Girls:

The girls’ hockey team stayed at home on Thursday night for a rematch with the Brainerd Warriors. Earlier in the season the girls lost to Brainerd 1-2 in overtime, so they were looking for revenge tonight. They came into the game with a lot of momentum as they just recently beat Willmar 3-2.

The whole game was very close and a very hard fought battle. Two very good hockey teams battled for three whole periods and the  storming Sabres came out on top. They won 1-0 as they shut out Brainerd. The goal came in the first period from Megan Cook on a power play and they were able to maintain that small lead for the rest of the game.

This was a very big win for the girls as they got their revenge on Brainerd, and their record now sits at 14-4-2 and 8-2 in the conference. Their next game is against Roseau next Friday. They hope to continue this success as the regular season is starting to near the end.
