This season’s big-ticket holiday movie is Office Christmas Party, a comedy starring an all-star cast of T.J. Miller, Jason Bateman, Jennifer Aniston, Olivia Munn, and Kate McKinnon. Being the most advertised Christmas movie of the year, I had to review it.

The story surrounds the struggling Chicago branch of a made-up tech company. The manager, Clay, (T.J. Miller) lives in the shadow of his sister, Carol, (Jennifer Aniston) who is the C.E.O. since their dad passed away. This, of course, spawns quite the rivalry, and when Carol threatens to shut down the branch, Clay decides through some train of thought that that means they need to throw a giant party. Complications ensue.

This movie starts very poorly. The first maybe twenty minutes is basically just poorly placed exposition, and there are actually very few jokes compared with the rest of the movie. Once the party begins is where Office Christmas Party hits its stride. This is what the movie is named after and where it’s most intriguing, funniest, and where it’s actually worth watching.

I’m guessing the party is the first part of the movie that was written because the ending is so over the top, forced, and unbelievable that it made the rest seem bad with it. It falls victim to what many comedies in the 2010’s have after The Hangover. Many modern comedies can’t seem to accept comedy on a small scale, everything has to be over the top.  But the whole movie isn’t bad. Office Christmas Party is a good party movie with a beginning and an ending that sucks it down.
