Sunday night, president-elect Donald Trump sat down with 60 Minutes to discuss his campaign and the future of his administration in office.

For Trump supporters, his seemingly professional attitude was not much of a surprise. But for non-supporters, Trump’s demeanor was more toned down than expected.

The main issues discussed throughout the interview were his actions throughout his campaign, the current protests and demonstrations, his plan for healthcare, Middle East issues, and strengthening our borders against illegal immigrants.

Trump expressed a minor level of regret for the negative words exchanged between himself and fellow candidate, Hillary Clinton. However, Trump was honest in saying that while their actions were not ones to be proud of, he can’t take it back.

When asked about his opinion on the current protests against his administration and the fear protestors have expressed, Trump said, “I would tell them don’t be afraid. Don’t be afraid. We are going to bring our country back, but certainly don’t be afraid.”

He was then told that several of his supporters have been harassing minority groups. Trump’s response was one of astonishment: “I am very surprised to hear that. I hate to hear that. I would say don’t do it. That’s terrible . . . I’m going to bring this country together.” He then went on, “I am so saddened to hear that. And I say stop it, if it helps.” Trump then turned to the camera and said, “I will say this, and I’ll say it right to the camera: Stop it.”

On the issue of healthcare, Trump stated it was going to be better and cheaper. He said that he had discussed healthcare with Obama, and that they’re working on a plan to better the healthcare for our nation.

Trump also indicated the importance of lowering taxes and that one of his first actions will be to help bring back our economy. He also said that he was not going to be taking a salary (the $400,000 per year the President of the United States receive). The only other presidents who have also forgone a salary were John F. Kennedy and Herbert Hoover (both donated their salaries to charity).

Trump was asked about his plan to tackle ISIS, and he was quick to say, “I don’t tell you that.” Lesley Stahl, the interviewer, pushed the issue and Trump said, “I’m not like the people going in right now and fighting Mosul and they announced it four months before they went into Mosul . . . it’s a tough fight because, number one, the . . . leaders of ISIS have left. Why do I have to tell you that?” Trump ended it by saying, “I’m not gonna say anything . . . All I can tell you is we’re going to get rid of ISIS.”

On the topic of illegal, undocumented immigrants Trump said, “We’re getting them out of our country, they’re here illegally . . . we want to secure our border.”

Lesley later asked him about his views on the LGBTQ community and his stance on same-sex marriage. Trump simply said that he’s been a supporter, and that he expressed that at the Republican National Convention, but it was not covered by the press. He said simply, “It’s irrelevant because it was already settled. It’s law. It was settled in the Supreme Court. I mean it’s done.”

Trump was interviewed individually, with his wife, Melania, and his four oldest children. He didn’t dodge any questions, and answered honestly about what he plans to do in office to “Make America Great Again.”
