It’s that time of year again, Halloween is right around the corner, that means costumes, candy, and if you park your car on the street in Sartell, it’s liable to get egged. Couldn’t we all use a little more happiness this October? That’s why I’m proposing we celebrate a new holiday. Jake Gyllenhaalloween is an opportunity to celebrate the acting genius that is Jake Gyllenhaal, and turns out he was in some pretty creepy movies, so let’s count down the top five spookiest Jake Gyllenhaal movies.

5. The Day After Tomorrow

The Day After Tomorrow is a disaster thriller in which Jake Gyllenhaal plays the son of a scientist who first discovers that the earth is about to go into a state of extreme chaos because of climate change. It features all sorts of spooky natural disasters like earthquakes, tornadoes, and hurricanes. So maybe tornadoes aren’t actually that scary in the traditional sense, and this actually isn’t a scary movie by any stretch, but it’s on this list purely because Jake Gyllenhaal doesn’t actually have that many spooky movies.

4. Nightcrawler

Nightcrawler is the story of Lou Bloom, a sociopath who makes his living racing to crimes before police and getting video to sell to news stations.  The scariest part of this movie is Jake Gyllenhaal himself. He plays a really creepy guy, and he plays him really well. Jake Gyllenhaal has some scary good acting and most of the movie takes place at night so that’s why Nightcrawler is number 4.

3. Prisoners

The first movie on this list that might actually scare you, Prisoners is a darn good crime thriller starring Hugh Jackman as a man who’s daughter has been kidnapped and must go on the hunt. Jake Gyllenhaal plays a detective with the same mission, and their paths cross in some pretty messed up ways. Check out Prisoners for a movie that will make you lose all trust in strangers.

2. Zodiac

Based on the true story of the Zodiac killer in San Francisco, Zodiac stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a newspaper cartoonist who becomes obsessed with tracking down the killer. In the process of the movie, the cartoonist becomes so obsessed the killer starts to track him down, and it gets pretty creepy that’s for sure. Check out Zodiac this October for a good mix of horror and mystery.

1.Donnie Darko

The quintessential Jake Gyllenhaalloween movie, Donnie Darko, is the tragic story of misunderstood teen Donnie Darko (played by yes, Jake Gyllenhaal, and featuring his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal, for two times the Gyllenhaal). Over the course of the movie, Donnie develops schizophrenia, becomes detached from reality, and is haunted by visions of a figure in a rabbit costume. This outlandish rabbit costumed thing leads to all sorts of danger like floods, fires, and end of the world prophecies. It’s a pretty trippy movie to be sure, and the climax even takes place on Halloween. If you want to celebrate Jake Gyllenhaalloween, this is your go to movie.
