Today, Americans are becoming more conscious of what they’re consuming.

Vegans are more common, anything labeled organic or natural are flying off the shelves, and healthy recipes are splashed all over Pinterest. But as healthy as we think we are eating our Cliff Bars and smoothies, food shelves in America are still prominently filled with things that are terrible for us. They’re so bad, that other countries have literally banned them from being sold. It’s time to re-evaluate. Here are nine foods we’re still consuming that other countries aren’t (because they’re smart).

  1. Artificial Food Dye

Foods like soda, cereal, and sports drinks are packed with chemicals made from petroleum. Yeah, that stuff that’s in gasoline.

  1. Farmed Salmon

If you’re buying farmed salmon rather than wild caught, you should switch. Farmed raised are on an unnatural diet of grains, antibiotics and other drugs. This makes the salmon gray, which is made pink with synthetic astaxanthin.

  1. Brominated Vegetable Oil

This stuff can be found in sports drinks and citrus flavored soda. Unfortunately, the main ingredient is a poisonous chemical that is corrosive to the body. It’s been linked to organ system damage, birth defects, schizophrenia, and other problems.

  1. Olestra

Olestra is used in fat-free potato chips and French fries. Although they’re fat-free, lower calorie counts don’t always mean it’s better for you. To lower the calorie count, they use the oil substitute Olestra, which inhibits your body’s ability to absorb vitamins.

  1. Azodicarbonamide

The chemical is found in frozen dinners, boxed pasta, packaged baked goods, and breads. It helps bleach flour quickly, and is used in foamed plastics. It has also been linked to asthma. We should probably not eat it.

  1. rBGH and rBST

These artificial hormones are found in milk and other dairy products. Cows treated with them can become infertile and develop inflamed udders. The hormones have also been linked to breast, colon, and prostate cancer in humans.

  1. BHA and BHT

Cereal, gum, butter, meat and mixed nuts contain this chemical that has been proven to cause cancer in rats. Yikes.

  1. Arsenic

Arsenic is common in chicken feed, and is classified as a human carcinogen by the Environmental Protection Agency, but we still consume it.

  1. Potassium Bromate

Made with the same harmful chemical as brominated vegetable oil, this ingredient is found in wraps, rolls, flatbread, and bagel chips. It helps with decreasing baking time and cost, but it raises the risk of kidney damage, cancer, and nervous system damage.
