avocado-brownies-mainNothing makes your mouth water more than the thought of “healthy” desserts, right? To be honest, the thought of anything “fat free” or “sugar free” makes my stomach turn. I see calories as delicious points. When it comes to desserts, anything less than 100% fatty, sugary goodness is less than desirable. Yet despite my inclination regarding the matter, I decided to try something new: avocado brownies. My first thought was that it would be distasteful, but I went forward regardless.

When I first began mixing the batter, the ingredients had me doing a double take. Maple syrup and applesauce? What? Who puts those into brownies? I began questioning my decision to be adventurous. At first the batter looked about as appetizing as baby food. I was skeptical, to say the least.

Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised.  Slowly, as I added all of the ingredients, the avocado green disappeared into a delicious chocolatey batter. After finishing the batter it looked just like any other brownie batter, and it even smelled good! But I still wasn’t convinced. When the timer sounded it signaled not only the end of the cooking time, but time to put these brownies to the true test…the taste test!

I didn’t tell my first “test subjects” what was in the brownies until they had already taken a few bites. The verdict was all positive. I took the rest of the brownies to a second group, this time telling them before hand that they were no ordinary treats. The result was the same; there were smiles all around. I ventured to taste one myself, and I was shocked that they tasted as good as they did.

avocado-brownies-finalSo in my opinion, avocado brownies are a hit! And the best part of all is that they are healthier than regular brownies. So ease a little of the binge guilt and treat yourself to some avocado brownies!

Here is the recipe I used. (Note: I used all purpose flour instead of coconut flour and I also added a 1/4 cup of sugar.) Enjoy!
