With the recent and controversial killings of African- American people by caucasian police officers, people have become frustrated and angered.  In response to these killings, more focus has been put on the group Black Lives Matter.  This is a group formed at promoting equality for the African- American community.

Peaceful Black Lives Matter Protests

In the second addition of the SHS Journalism class editorial board discussion, we covered our thoughts on this topic.

Black Lives Matter shuts down the Mall of America

The debate ensued and everyone was bouncing ideas off of each other. The ideas that everyone seemed to agree on were “Peaceful Protests” and that more of the population needs to be more educated on the basic goals of BLM. Our discussion supported the peaceful protests, but we believe that there is no reason to shut down highways and malls just so to get a point across. We felt that this just negatively influences people’s thoughts on the movement and taht some may lose respect for the group. We also felt that not everyone has taken the time to understand the true goal of BLM because the true goal is to promote equality for all, but many people take it as only black lives deserve equality.

After this discussion, and everyone sharing their ideas on the topic, it was easy to see that everyone thought about it a little different. All those ideas, however, helped us come to the conclusion that the idea of BLM is great, but the execution maybe needs to be changed.
