An electricity burned as bright as the green shirts on the backs of the crowd at Friday night’s Tommy B basketball game. More than just another game, it was in honor of a Sartell alum Tom Bearson who was killed his freshman year of college. He was a basketball star and very influential in the community. His legacy was clear by the energy and constant cheering throughout the second annual memorial game.

The boys went neck and neck with Fergus Falls into overtime, eventually falling 63-58. Eric Markman finished with 19 points, Trent Meyer with 17, and Chris Belling with 15.

Captains Eric Markman and Chris Belling answered some questions after the intense games.

What did Greg Bearson talk to you about at yesterday’s practice?

Chris: He preached about having fun and playing for Tom. He also said sports don’t define you, but your actions towards the people around you do.

What were some of your emotions before the game?

Eric: It was crazy knowing how many fans would be there supporting the team, and supporting the Bearson Foundation.

How did this game feel different from other games?

Chris: Playing in front of a crowd like this is a huge factor. The crowd gets into it and that really lights the fire in our hearts.

Eric: Both years we’ve done the Tommy B you feel like there’s a sixth man on the court, and that’s Tom’s presence. You can feel it.

As freshmen basketball players when Tom was a senior, what kind of influence did he have on you?

Chris: Huge. We came to watch the team, but he was the star.

Eric: [My] 8th, 9th, and 10th grade [years] I watched him, and I pushed myself to be like Tom. I wanted to have a jump like him and be confident and strong.
