Playwright Harvey Fierstein and lyricist Cyndi Lauper together created the spectacular show “Kinky Boots” in October of 2012. This musical is about a father-son relationship built off a shoe factory that is slowly going out of business. In order to save the family legacy after his father dies, Charlie Price searches for anything that will get the factory back in business. That’s when he meets Lola, a flamboyant drag queen with amazing thigh high boots. They work together to create a line of strong and sturdy kinky boots made to withstand the weight of male drag queens. This musical is great for a fun and entertaining night with friends who are in the mood for upbeat and sassy music.

Likes:

The music is so upbeat and sassy and jazzy and the moral of the story is so empowering and really screams for equality. The glittery boots and fun colors really bring the show to another level. This show intrigued me so much that I craved to be a part of it. The story appeals to a large audience and it also teaches people a very important lesson about acceptance and being true to yourself. Of all the songs in the show, my favorite would be “Sex Is In The Heel” because it makes me just want to strut down a runway in bright flashy red boots.

Dream Role: Lauren, who eventually becomes the love interest of the main character Charlie. She sings the song “The History of Wrong Guys” and nailed.

Dislikes:

NONE! This show is honestly so well put out with little to no flaws. The mixture of the disco music with acrobatic dancing is so entertaining to watch.

I also interviewed my mother, Karla Krueger, about her experience with the show.

“I liked how two people who seem to have nothing in common find something they have in common. In this case, they share the same feelings about the expectations their father put on them. What I didn’t like? Nothing! My favorite song is the ending which is a mash up between two songs called Just Be and Raise You Up. My favorite character is Lola and I would love to play him in this show. I have seen this once and I would love to see it many more times if I got the chance.”

To all the theatre lovers out there, I 100% recommend seeing Kinky Boots sometime in your life. It is a sassy and fun filled show that can make anyone smile.
