If you decide to fulfill your New Year’s resolution to work out more, but you can’t afford a gym membership, this article is for YOU!

Imagine this: You magically get an extreme amount of motivation. You put on some workout clothes, grab your headphones, and get ready to go. Unfortunately, it’s seven degrees outside, and you’re underdressed. Bummer.

Running Outside:

There are many things that could happen to you if the weather is too cold and you are not dressed properly. This week I decided to go for a run. I thought I was dressed warm enough with my hat and mittens, but my pants were too thin, and I am still in pain from the cold.

When exercising outside in the winter be sure to do the following:

  1. Dress warmly!! (Honestly, lots of layers are important!!)
  2. Drink LOTS of water!! (Stay hydrated!)
  3. If you decide to go at night, wear bright, reflective clothes and carry a flashlight so drivers can see you!
  4. Tell someone where you’re going!! (If you don’t come back for a long time they can go out and find you!)
  5. Wear shoes with good traction! (Slipping is embarrassing and painful!)
  6. Wear a hat and mittens! (Keep your hands warm, and make sure you don’t lose all of your body heat!)
  7. Watch for drivers! (It would suck to be hit by a car..)

Staying Inside:

There are many exercises that you can do inside. If you want a good workout without paying for a gym membership or having to go outside, there are many simple, but effective things you can do. These things include:

  1. Stairs (Run up and down the stairs, but be careful not to fall)
  2. Dancing (Crank up the music!!)
  3. Planking, Sit-ups, Lunges (You can do all of these exercises while watching TV)
  4. High Knees and Butt Kickers (You can also do this while watching TV)

Watch YouTube videos for more workouts you can do!

A couple of videos you could try:

Tips:

Be sure to warm up and cool down! Don’t just jump right into an exercise and then not do anything after you are done!

Stretch it out! There are many different stretches you can do to make sure you don’t become too sore!

DRINK LOTS OF WATER!!! Staying hydrated is so important!!

Ice your muscles if you have to! (or just use some snow from outside)

Eating better will also help you become healthier. Make sure to incorporate all five food groups into your meals (grains, vegetables, proteins, dairy, fruits).

Stay safe and (try to) have fun!
