Hacksaw Ridge is based on the story of conscientious objector, Desmond Doss, (Andrew Garfield) who, based on religious beliefs, refused to disobey God’s commandments by killing, but felt a moral obligation to join the military. When training, there was tremendous pressure and large amounts of hazing, but Desmond refused to give up, even to the point of being brought to trial for it. Eventually, Desmond’s company makes it to Hacksaw Ridge, where the Japanese are entrenched in their position, and Desmond’s courage is put to the test.

While the synopsis makes it sound like a movie that is largely anti-war, Hacksaw Ridge does a good job of being objective. The message in this movie isn’t anti-war, it’s pro-sticking to beliefs. Desmond is tested time and time again, from hazing to being faced with the horrors of war. It’s truly entertaining to watch his journey play out on screen. One other commendable part of this movie is the action. Any war movie has a responsibility to provide fast-paced, entertaining action that’s also easy to follow. Hacksaw Ridge was the epitome of this. There’s a clear sense of where the Americans are coming from, where the Japanese are coming from, and where they meet in the middle. The action is intense, terrifying, and disgusting. Director Mel Gibson was not afraid to portray the horrors of war, and these things only serve to contrast the heroics of Desmond Doss.

Hacksaw Ridge is a movie that will impress both war movie fans and the general public
